Official info: The Real McCoy rum is based on the story of Bill McCoy, the pioneer rum runner of the prohibition era, who fueled the Roaring Twenties by delivering over 2 million bottles of rum to the speakeasies of New York back in 1920.
McCoy became a household name because he never adulterated the alcohol. Unlike the other rum runners of the time period, who cut the liquor with wicked chemicals like turpentine and wood alcohol, McCoy only delivered the best and he, and his product, became known around the world as The Real McCoy.
Although he eventually became the face of defiance against an unpopular law, McCoy never actually broke the law himself (he didn’t even drink alcohol). McCoy never sailed his beautiful, tall ship, “Arethusa,” into US territorial waters. Instead, he chose to anchor 3 miles off-shore, which back then was international waters, acting as a floating liquor store within sight of the metropolis of New York. People would motor out to McCoy, buy the rum and take their chances with the Coast Guard on the way back in.
It’s a great story and today, the rum absolutely lives up to the name. The Real McCoy is a unique blend of column and pot still rum, aged the authentic way, in select American oak Bourbon barrels. This award winning rum has no artificial flavors, inks or perfumes. We don’t add juices, tinctures or neutral spirits. It’s just good, old-fashioned rum – authentically hand crafted in what we call the “Prohibition Tradition”.
