The Barcelona Rum Congress -BRC- has launched an international rum contest this year for its second edition called The Barcelona Rum Awards. These annual awards for rums of the year are meant for both specialists and the lay public alike. The final verdict will be pronounced by a group of professionals from different areas of the liquor and spirits industry, and the awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday 31 October at the Cúpula in the Centro Comercial Las Arenas.
The BRC has chosen a completely independent jury with the freedom to choose as it sees fit. The nine experts that make up the Barcelona Rum Awards Jury come from the USA, France and Spain. They are: Alexandre Vingtier, writer specialized in rum; Begoña Amilibia head of the wine cellars at Real Tesoro – José Estevez; Javier Pulido from Master of Spirits; Jean-Paul Bouyat, president of Bardinet; Jerry Gitany, co-founder of La Cofrerie du Rhum along with Benoît Bail of Liqueurs et Spiritueux; Oriol Elías, bartender; Robert Burr, founder of the Miami Rum Renaissance and Santiago Bronchales, creator of Blended&Matured. All the jury members support the idea of a global and original perspective in awards given in the spirits sector to give them an international touch.
The BRC Awards aims to become the leading educational and trends guide for professionals, and an easily recognizable symbol of confidence and quality for the lay public when it comes to choosing rums, increase knowledge of spirits and appreciation, and encourage their consumption.
The BRC Awards is just one of the new features of this second edition. The awards are included in the EDUCATION area, where the focus on the science of mixology is more academic. This area will also host Bar Talks, a time to share ideas, concepts and projects while debating with interesting people; Key Notes, where the latest trends in service are analyzed inspirationally; Master Classes, a form of training for sector professionals, and tastings led by master blenders that will educate the visitor’s palate on each rum’s tasting notes.
